A Maldives honeymoon comes down to five decisions: when you go, which resort you choose, how you get there, which villa you stay in and what your meal plan covers. Entry is simple for citizens of Azerbaijan — no visa since 29 April 2026 — so the real work is getting those five choices right.
The Maldives is easy to dream about and surprisingly easy to get wrong. The same budget can buy a sunny week in a villa you love — or a week of long transfers and a meal plan that doesn't match how you eat and drink. Momento Travel, a travel agency in Baku, plans Maldives trips by putting two or three resorts side by side and matching the transfer type to your landing time. Here are the decisions, in the order that matters.
1. When is the best time to go to the Maldives?
The Maldives Meteorological Service describes two seasons:
| Period | Season | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| January–March | Northeast monsoon (iruvai), the dry season | On average 10–11 hours of sunshine a day; the most requested months |
| December and April | Transition months | Between the two seasons |
| Mid-May to November | Southwest monsoon (hulhangu), the wet season | More rain and wind, yet still 7–9 hours of sunshine a day on average |
Temperatures stay roughly between 25 and 32°C all year.
If your wedding date sets the trip, the wet season is not a deal-breaker. Choose a resort with a good spa, several restaurants and room for a slow day. The dry months are the most requested, so for those dates it pays to decide early.
2. Which resort should you choose?
Maldivian tourism has mostly followed the "one island, one resort" model. Your resort is your whole world for the week: its restaurants, its beach, its reef. Choosing the resort is choosing the holiday.
What to weigh as a couple:
- Atmosphere. Quiet and intimate, or lively with a choice of bars and restaurants?
- Adults-only or family. Some resorts take adults only — for a honeymoon, that usually means calm.
- House reef. If you love snorkelling, being able to swim to the reef from the beach changes every day.
- Distance from Malé. It decides the transfer — and the transfer matters more than you'd expect.
3. Seaplane or speedboat?
| Transfer | Typically for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Speedboat | Resorts close to the international airport | The simplest option |
| Seaplane | Resorts in more distant atolls | Flies only between sunrise and sunset; baggage 20 kg + 5 kg hand luggage per person |
| Domestic flight + boat | The furthest atolls | A flight from Velana to a regional airport, then a boat |
The seaplane rule shapes the whole itinerary. Trans Maldivian Airways, the seaplane operator, asks guests to land in the Maldives by 15:30 local time to reach the resort the same day. Land later, and your first night is in Malé or Hulhumalé — fine if planned, frustrating if discovered at the airport. The same logic works on the way back: the operator transfers guests whose international flight leaves after 9:00, so a very early departure can mean leaving the resort a day earlier.
The transfer is also a noticeable part of the final price.
4. Beach villa or overwater villa?
- Beach villa — sand at your door, palm shade, often more privacy. For couples who like to walk barefoot.
- Overwater villa — on stilts above the lagoon, with steps straight into the water. The iconic Maldives view, usually at a higher price.
- Pool villa — both types often come with a private pool.
Some couples split the stay: a few nights on the beach, a few over the water. One more detail worth asking about — does the villa face the sunset or the sunrise?
5. Which meal plan: half board, full board or all-inclusive?
| Plan | What it usually includes |
|---|---|
| BB | Breakfast only |
| HB (half board) | Breakfast and dinner |
| FB (full board) | Breakfast, lunch and dinner; drinks usually extra |
| All-inclusive | Meals plus drinks from the resort's list, including alcohol |
Alcohol in the Maldives is sold only at tourist resorts and hotels — not in Malé or on inhabited islands — and travellers may not bring their own into the country. On a resort island, the resort bar is effectively the only place to buy a drink. If wine at dinner and a cocktail at sunset are part of your plan, compare half board and all-inclusive honestly. All-inclusive often comes in several tiers, so read what each one covers.
What do resorts offer honeymooners?
Many resorts have honeymoon offers: a decorated villa, a bottle of sparkling wine, a dinner on the sand, a spa treatment. They often come with conditions — a marriage certificate and a window after the wedding set by the resort. Terms change by resort and date; the manager checks what applies to yours. Just mention it's your honeymoon when booking.
Do Azerbaijani citizens need a visa for the Maldives?
- No visa needed. The mutual visa exemption agreement between Azerbaijan and the Maldives has been in force since 29 April 2026: up to 90 days on an ordinary passport. Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lists the Maldives as visa-free, and Maldives Immigration grants tourist entry on arrival, with no pre-approval.
- Passport with a machine-readable zone (MRZ), valid for at least one month.
- Documents: confirmed return tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered property and enough funds for the stay.
- IMUGA. Within 96 hours before arrival, fill in the Traveller Declaration on the official IMUGA portal of Maldives Immigration. It's free, and each traveller submits their own.
- No alcohol in your luggage — duty-free included.

What should you pack for the Maldives?
- A soft bag that fits the seaplane allowance: 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage.
- Light cotton clothes and sandals.
- Something covering shoulders and knees for a visit to an inhabited island — modest dress is expected there.
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, high-SPF cream, a rash guard for snorkelling.
- A light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and the flight.
- Personal medication.
- A copy of your marriage certificate, if you want the honeymoon perks.
One small detail: the Maldives is one hour ahead of Baku.
What does the price of a Maldives trip depend on?
Not a number — a formula:
- Flights — dates, direct or with a connection.
- Nights — some resorts set a minimum stay on certain dates.
- Villa — beach, overwater, with or without a pool.
- Meal plan — from BB to all-inclusive.
- Transfer — speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight.
- Season — dry months and holiday periods are usually in higher demand.
- Taxes — resort bills include a tourism goods and services tax and a per-guest, per-night Green Tax.
Change one element and the total moves. That's why we don't publish "Maldives from…" — the manager calculates the exact price for your dates and puts two or three resorts side by side. Not sure the Maldives is your kind of romance? Check the holiday-type-to-destination table.
